Most people don’t think about their bathroom until it stops working for them. Planning an accessible bathroom early is one of the smartest moves for aging in place: a high tub wall that was fine at 40 becomes a fall risk at 75. A slippery floor, a fixed showerhead you can’t reach, a toilet that’s too low to stand up from comfortably — small things, until they’re the reason someone can’t live safely in their own home.

A senior-friendly bathroom conversion rebuilds the bathroom around the person using it: easier entry, somewhere safe to sit, water you can control while seated, and surfaces that grip instead of slide. It’s not a hospital bathroom. Done properly, it looks like a modern renovation that happens to be safe — because it is one.

We build these conversions across Metro Vancouver. Our most recent one was in Langley: a senior client who could no longer use their old bathroom at all. We removed the tub, built a custom walk-in shower base with a built-in seat and a handheld shower, and gave them back a bathroom they can use independently — finished in 8 days for $8,800. You can read the full story and see the photos on our Langley bathroom renovation project page.

What’s included in a senior-friendly bathroom conversion

Every home and every person is different, so no two conversions are identical. But most senior-friendly conversions draw from the same set of proven features:

Tub-to-walk-in shower conversion. This is the heart of most conversions. The tub comes out and a walk-in shower goes in — low or zero-threshold entry, so there’s nothing tall to climb over. The single biggest fall risk in a bathroom is getting in and out of the tub; removing it removes the risk.

A built-in seat or bench. A tiled, waterproof seat inside the shower means bathing seated — no standing on a wet surface, no balancing on one leg. On our Langley conversion, the seat was built into the shower base itself: solid, permanent, and part of the design, not a plastic add-on.

A handheld shower on a slide bar. Paired with the seat, this is what makes independent bathing possible. The showerhead moves to the person instead of the other way around — usable seated or standing, adjustable to any height.

Grab bars, properly anchored. Grab bars only work if they’re anchored into solid blocking behind the tile — not just screwed into drywall. We plan bar locations during the wall-prep stage and install solid wood blocking before the tile goes on, so every bar can actually hold a person’s weight.

Non-slip flooring. Smaller-format floor tile with more grout lines, or textured porcelain — surfaces that grip underfoot even when wet. We steer clients toward the right tile, not just the prettiest one.

Comfort-height toilet. A taller toilet (roughly chair height) makes sitting down and standing up dramatically easier. It’s a small change with an outsized daily impact.

Lever-handle faucets. Easier to operate with limited grip strength or arthritis than knobs — a push or a light pull instead of a twist.

Better lighting. Bright, even light — usually recessed pot lights — because poor visibility causes falls just as surely as slippery tile does.

Not every conversion needs all of these. During the free in-home assessment, we look at the person, the bathroom, and the budget, and recommend the combination that actually matters for that household.

A real conversion: Langley, 8 days, $8,800

Our Langley project started with a bathroom the client — a senior — simply couldn’t use anymore. The tub was the barrier: too high to step into safely, too deep to feel secure in.

So the tub came out. In its place we built a custom walk-in shower base with a built-in seat, added a handheld shower so the client can wash while seated, installed a custom niche for toiletries at seated reach, and finished everything with large-format tile over DensShield backer board and RedGard waterproofing. A custom vanity completed the room.

Eight working days. $8,800. Fourteen photos of the whole transformation are on the Langley project page — including what the bathroom looked like before.

That’s what a defined, honest conversion looks like: one bathroom, rebuilt around the person who uses it, at a price quoted before work started.

Our process, start to finish

  1. Free in-home assessment. We come to you, look at the bathroom, talk about who’s using it and what they struggle with, take measurements, and check the plumbing. Mon–Sun, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM.
  2. A fixed written quote. One price for the defined scope — not a “starting from” number that grows. You know the cost before we start.
  3. Permits, handled. If plumbing moves or fixtures are added, most Metro Vancouver municipalities require a permit. We confirm the requirement with the right city office and build it into the plan — it’s part of the process, not a surprise halfway through.
  4. Demolition and disposal. Old tub, tile, and fixtures out; debris hauled away. We protect the rest of your home while we work.
  5. Rough-in, blocking, and waterproofing. Plumbing and electrical roughed in, solid blocking installed everywhere a grab bar will go, then DensShield backer board with RedGard waterproofing over every wet surface. This is the part you never see and the part that matters most.
  6. Tile, fixtures, and finishes. Floors, shower walls, seat, niche, toilet, vanity, faucets, glass, grab bars — installed and sealed.
  7. Walkthrough with you. We go through everything together before we call it done. If something isn’t right, we fix it.

Typical conversions run 5–8 working days on site — the Langley project took 8.

What does a senior-friendly bathroom conversion cost?

Honest answer: it depends on the scope, the tile, and what your plumbing looks like. Our completed Langley conversion — tub removal, custom walk-in shower base with built-in seat, handheld shower, niche, custom vanity, full waterproofing — was $8,800.

Frequently asked questions

What does a senior-friendly bathroom conversion include?
Typically: removing the tub and building a walk-in shower with a low or zero-threshold entry, a built-in seat, a handheld shower on a slide bar, properly anchored grab bars, non-slip flooring, a comfort-height toilet, and lever-handle faucets. The exact combination depends on the person and the bathroom — we recommend it during a free in-home assessment.

How long does a tub-to-walk-in shower conversion take?
Our defined scopes take 5–8 working days on site. The Langley senior-accessibility conversion took 8 days, start to finish.

Do I need a permit for an accessible bathroom conversion?
If plumbing moves or new fixtures are added, most Metro Vancouver municipalities require a permit. We confirm the requirement with the correct city office as part of every quote — it’s built into our process.

Can you add grab bars or a handheld shower without a full renovation?
Sometimes. It depends on your walls (grab bars need solid blocking behind the tile) and your existing plumbing. A free in-home assessment tells you what’s actually possible in your bathroom — honestly, including when the answer is “you don’t need a full renovation.”

How much does a senior-friendly bathroom conversion cost?
Every bathroom is different, but our completed Langley conversion — tub out, custom walk-in shower with built-in seat and handheld shower, full waterproofing, custom vanity — was $8,800. Get an instant range from our free cost calculator, or book a free in-home estimate for a fixed written quote.

Will an accessible bathroom look institutional?
No — that’s exactly what we avoid. The Langley conversion has large-format tile, a custom vanity, and a built-in tiled seat that looks like part of the design, because it is. Safe and modern aren’t opposites.
